KOLKATA

SO I wake up and I m in a complete different world. It seems like a dream but the "HAWRAH" written in big big fonts on the front wall assure me that I m not sleeping and this is indeed the last (if u count only 4) metro of India which I was yet to see. (I've been through Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, in last one year)(Though I would also count ahmebadab, Hyderabad and Bangalore as metro but they are not one of the four golden corners of India)
So its 4:00 AM in the morning and I am standing amongst a lot of people looking like me and speaking a language which I can understand. Kolkata has changed a lot I hear from a friend who is basically Bengali with me.
"sala kuch to gadbad hai, main Bengali me pooch raha hu aur log Hindi me jawab de rahe hai" was his frustrations statement.
But was a big relief for me after enjoying (!!!!!) my last 8 months in core south India.
within next half an hour I(with 7 other creature who are going to do a market share improvement study of whole north east region for commercial vehicles !!!!!!!) am in a taxi and then I see the famous hawrah bridge..
The awesome Ganga (called hubli or bhagirathi here) below me.
Seems black in night passing by quietly.
She knows people don’t care about her so much now-a-days.
The view at this time is of silence.
Didn’t give me the impression of it being the most crowded city in India.
May be I need to roam around more…
(More about the roaming part including the trams in next episode…)

Wi-Fi Incident

Now this is really weird thing that cannot happen to anyone.
The place where my current training is going on is a small room with a projector, a white board and some chairs. One-day one fellow among 27 of us brought his laptop with him and pressed the power button. Now windows has this lot of things that gets loaded whenever a computer starts, so he was waiting for them to finish. The last item to be loaded is network connections. The local area connection icon appeared with x on it meaning a network cable is not connected and then following it came the second networking option of wireless. Surprisingly a pop up box came out saying found wireless network. For more information, click this box. Now the place is quite remotely located and he did not hoped to catch a wireless network there. He just clicked it that finally led to connected status after a few seconds.
He was somewhat happy, as there was no password security protecting the connection. Then his mind worked and he thought about the building standing a few hundred meters away. Olympia Tech Park is huge commercial complex having many IT companies in it so he thought it must be from there. Obviously his own Co. Cannot afford to have Wi-Fi. Next thing anyone does was to open internet explorer and see whether this connection is internet connected or just intranet. The default homepage of Google loaded within a fraction of second answer he was doubling happy for thwart net speed. The information was soon made public and within a few days, there were about 10 laptops using the bandwidth. Torrent to YouTube was available without any restriction and the downloader’s came into action. It went on successfully for a month until it was time for them to go for a month long training including visits to places so they won't be coming to that office place. After successful completion of the month, they were back with their laptops. Lot of new movies, serials and other things (hope u understood) were there on the net total download. This time the network was not available and they felt disappointed. It appeared for just one hour during the lunch break and disappeared. Anyway, it was free and you can't complain that you are not getting it...
The next day the head of their training center comes in with a man who has some papers in his hand. It was not a new scene as they were having new people coming for lecturers daily and the head generally comes for the introduction. The head had some usual greetings and the asked how many of us were having laptops. A few hands went up in the response. We might need laptops for diagnostics of a vehicles' electronic system newly launched was the normal assumption. The next question was and how many have Wi-Fi enabled laptops. The hands were still in air but the mind started to move. Then he asked us were we using any Wi-Fi network for browsing internet and there were a few yes (very few than the rises hands just before). He asked us to guess the source and we innocently named the tech park nearly but this our heart knew we were wrong. Then he told us the whole situation that the network was from our office only from the next room of technical literature department. The month’s BSNL phone bill that was the network bearer was showed to us. The amount printed on it was fourth two thousand rupees.
Then he told us how we could do this. The higher authorities are asking for explanation from the poor fellow in charge of that section. The head gave lectured us on our credibility and ethics and other things for the next half an hour. Finally, he started to leave the room saying, 'I leave it to you people now and we will meet tomorrow on what you people propose to remedy the problem. The ball was now in or court.'
Nevertheless, we have one person with us. The person is our mentor during the training, an old man with tons answer tons of experience of industry and currently working as consultant to the co. he said it from our side that we were sorry for whatever happened and asked the head directly whether he wanted the money to be recovered from us. This was something he didn't want to answer. He gave his typical gol-mol answer and left the room repeating the sentence he said previously. The next half an hour was all about discussing with the mentor, what can be done. This is where the real drama starts. The best thing about human is the ability to think differently. As it depends on his environment, his past, his dreams and unlimited factors like that hence make every human different from another. The people had lots of opinion ranging from aggressive to defensive, timid and emotional as well. Here are some of them.
1. We should obviously pay the money as we used this facility and only we are the reason of the problem.
2. Why? They should have secured it with a password. Today it’s we tomorrow someone else can use it...
3. But dude the person told you he has our IP addressed and Mac numbers.
4. But he does not have our names. ;)
5. Its not about money dude, its about credibility. Once you lost it you will not get respect, the head will tell the story to HR department and our marketing head.
6. Pardon me but I am not going to pay for what I didn't do... I won't even say sorry.
7. Don't be emotional be, Vaise bhi co. Can't take money from you. Who will give receipt or where the money will go. It’s all complicated and they won't do it.
8. Why should we propose of paying? We will just in case the order of this sort comes from a DGM or ED-HR.
9. Why you people want to lose your credibility over a few buks. Money will come and go but if these people get a point like this they will poke us every time teasing us and may be it could affect our performance appraisal.
10. Tomorrow, they will come and tell us that this rooms AC and projector are contributing a lot to the bill so we should share it...
11. If there is a 500 rupees note lying on the road and we pick it then we are not thieves. The way he is projecting us is as if we have done something very big fraud intentionally. If we don't pick the note lying on the road than we are a big 'CHUTIYE'.
12. Etc etc etc...

All in all everyone seems correct here or there... Everyone has a point to prove and all are exactly right from their point of view. However, there must be something, which should be the final decision.

This was just a little and small example of life. Generally, there are lots and lots of variable affecting the situation. If you view from its other view, it seems quite different.

SO think about your life, where are you looking at it from…
